Final Grade Calculator
Tell us your current grade, the grade you want, and how much your final exam is worth. We tell you exactly what you need to score.
Formula: required = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Works for any course where the final exam is the only remaining graded component.
Worked example
Current grade 85%, final worth 40%, target 90%:
required = (90 − 85 × (1 − 0.40)) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 51) ÷ 0.40 = 97.5%
So you’d need a 97.5% on the final to finish the course at 90%. Every point above that is a safety margin.
Final grade questions, answered
What if the required score is over 100%?
Then the target is out of reach with your current grade. You either need to raise your current grade (recheck or extra credit) or aim for a lower overall target — the grade needed calculator shows both paths.
My school uses points, not percentages. Does this work?
Yes — convert your points to a percentage of the total first (earned ÷ total × 100), then use the calculator. Or use the percentage calculator for the conversion.
How is this different from the grade needed calculator?
Same underlying math — this one frames it around your final exam; the grade needed calculator is built for "what do I need to keep my scholarship / get an A" planning.
